The Personal, Social and Health Education programme (PSHE)

All Year 7 pupils at Builth Wells High School receive one fifty minute period per week of PSHE. These lessons are an essential part of the overall Pastoral System of the school and they deal with important aspects of life, which are not always dealt with as part of the academic curriculum.
We hope to help our students to become mature adults, able to deal confidently with the many difficult choices, which face them in an increasingly complex world.

Below is a brief outline of the topics covered by each year group.

Year Seven
Transition into the secondary school. Peer Mediation.
Safety - Road Safety, Fire Safety, the role of the Police, Electricity Safety.
Sex Education - Puberty and Menstruation.
Drugs Education - the dangers of Alcohol and Tobacco.
Careers Education - A visit to the Careers Library and introduction to Careers Resources.

Year Eight and Year Nine
The main theme of Personal and Social Education in Years 8 and 9 is ‘A Healthy Lifestyle’. During these two years the pupils follow a “circus” in which they study the following elements in rotation. The pupils study each of these topics for one lesson per week for one term

Nutrition
Citizenship
Substance Abuse

Year Nine
Drama (which is related to Health issues)
Apause Sex Education
Careers Guidance and Work Related Education

Year Ten.
Drugs and Alcohol Education.
Apause Sex Education - Contraception, HIV and Aids.
Health Education - Nutrition and exercise.
Careers Education, Work Experience/Education in Industry.

Years Eleven, Twelve & Thirteen
Great emphasis is also placed on the skills required for Careers Choice, Applications and Interviews and also for choosing courses in Further and Higher Education. PSHE is an important element of the Welsh Baccalaureate. Whenever possible, speakers are brought in from the local community to give talks to students. .

Note: Withdrawal from P.S.H.E. Sex Education Classes.
Parents or Guardians have the right to withdraw their children from the P.S.H.E. Sex Education classes if they so wish.
