Homework - Frequency and nature

Homework is given when considered necessary for the following reasons:
RESEARCH: 10 minute internet question, in order to prepare a child for a forthcoming piece of work or increase awareness of Welsh culture.
CATCH UP: to write up work missed through absence
REVISION: for a test or formal assessment (once a term)
LEARNING BY HEART: e.g. for an Eisteddfod poem (weekly during the Spring Term)
WATCHING TV: watching S4C to further understanding of Welsh (ongoing) listen to Radio Cymru

Assessment pattern

Please see your child’s assessment booklet for details. The booklet should have gone home to you and, having received your signature, returned to school to be kept in your child’s Welsh folder. It is bilingual so that parents can understand the skills required if they do not speak Welsh.

Marking and grading of work

Year 7 Year 8 Year 9

The Welsh Department is currently implementing Assessment for Learning techniques through out Key Stage 3. (for more details see www.assessment-reform-group.org)

This means that neither marks nor grades are normally given on work. Instead pupils are asked questions and given input that focuses them on how they can move ahead. This usually is a maximum of three points per piece of work. This method has been researched thoroughly by top UK academics and, when implemented correctly, is proven to increase progress.

Recommended wider reading (and viewing)

Reading Welsh regularly is ESSENTIAL for all 1st Language pupils if they are to develop their skills in Welsh to their potential. Pupils should have at least one reading book on the go at all times. We need parental support to help us develop reading skills. Please refer to the Dept. Reading List for suitable titles.
S4C programmes like ‘Y Clwb Rygbi’, ‘Pobol y Cwm’, ‘Yr Wythnos’, ‘Rownd a Rownd’.

How you can help your children

- Revise language patterns and vocabulary
- Encourage them to watch Welsh TV programmes
- Learn Welsh yourself (courses available in school)
- Radio Wales website
- ACEN website

Have regular contact with the school (not just parents’ evenings) and develop a positive and supportive relationship with teachers.

Do everything you can to find Welsh languages experiences for your child outside of school.

Use the library to find and borrow Welsh books.

Encourage your child to read in Welsh outside school.
