Homework

Frequency

During Years 7-9, students are given homework once a fortnight in Art and Design, although sometimes in the Summer Term they are given longer tasks, or tasks to complete class work.

Likely form that homework will take

We give students a homework list for each term, which means that they have all of the homework tasks in advance, and we use this to keep a record of their progress with homework grades, and to give them comments on their work. Students are given one homework task every fortnight, and the homework list is displayed in their sketchbooks.

Student Grouping

In KS3 (Years 7-9), students are grouped in mixed ability classes, with a mixture of form classes. In practical subjects such as Science, DT and Art and Design, we teach students in smaller classes to allow more individual help with practical tasks, and easier access to equipment and facilities.

Assessment Pattern

Class work is marked formally at the end of every project, which is once a term or once a half term. Informal assessment takes place during lessons. Students are then made aware of their class marks and the level which they are working towards, in order to set targets for continued improvement. Students’ marks and grades are recorded and monitored every term. Students also self evaluate their work at the end of some projects, in order to improve their understanding of the assessment process, and to continue to make progress. Homework is marked fortnightly or monthly as appropriate, so that students can gain feedback from their work, and track progress over the term.

Marking and Grading of Work

Class work – Students are marked for their main class work pieces in each project, this is based on achievement and is marked between A-E grades

Homework
– Students are given a grade for achievement (A-E), and a level for effort (1-4, with 1 being the highest)

Termly assessments
– These are given as levels, and are based on class work and homework from the term, and work completed. A target level will be set for the next term. As a guide, Level 4 is the average grade for a student at the end of Year 7, and a Level 5 is the average level for the end of Key Stage – Year 9. We would expect students to improve one and a half levels from Year 7 to Year 9.

Recommended wider reading (and viewing)

Any visits to exhibitions or displays encourage and improve students’ awareness of visual culture, and of other artists work. We would encourage students to draw, design, take part in craft or photography based interests outside school where possible. Many of our students improve their skills by drawing for enjoyment, and many also take part in local competitions, e.g. YFC, local shows, Royal Welsh.
