Geography is the study of the Earth, of its Peoples, of the Environment and how these link together. It is considered an old fashioned subject, about Maps, Capitals and Countries, but today it is about People, Climate Change, Pollution, Aid, Disasters and Hazards, we hope this department is able to give such experiences to our students.

The Aim of this Geography Department, is to produce students who, “…are with eyes open.” Meaning, they are aware of the World, the activities of Man and can link their own experiences into the work we are covering.

One critical area of Geography is experiencing the World outside the classroom, through Fieldwork.

Fieldwork

In 2010 aim to have all of Year 7 observing features and collecting data in a local river, in the latter half of the summer term and to give the Year 9 students experience of our local National park.

Currently Year 10 have a River/Fieldwork skills day, where they get a little wet and learn the skills needed for their coursework.

Year 12 have several days throughout the year focussing on urban growth around Cardiff, Sand Dune development at Borth, Environmental Pollution and River Processes along the Rhiedol Valley and Glacial Landscapes in Snowdonia.. We hope to be in position to regenerate residential fieldwork soon.

In addition, we also make extensive use the site of the school and the adjoining playing fields and the town for a variety of fieldwork tasks.

All Fieldwork and Off Site Activities are run in accordance with Powys County Council’s Off Site Activities Guidance, as such all experiences are Risk Assessed.

The aim of the department is to have more Fieldwork experiences, both whole day events and eventually residential ones.
