Library Christmas TreeA very special thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Laborde of Cefndyrys who have generously donated this year’s Christmas tree to the school. The tree was chosen and cut especially for the school and came from the Colt Field on the estate. We were fortunate that the Design Technology Department with the Year 7 pupils were able to manufacture bespoke, handmade decorations for the Christmas tree. During this exercise the Year 7s learned how to treat plastic and information about plastic. The decorations they produced were spiral using light gathering plastic, which they had to saw, drill and polish.
Coca-Cola 'Real Business Challenge'A group of Year 10 girls, Charlie Allison; Jessica Mead; Koren Morgan; Anna Turner; Chelsea Beehan; Hayley Lewis; Lucy Brown and Kim Williams, were recently selected to represent mid-Wales at the Millennium Stadium where the All Wales Finals of the Coca-Cola 'Real Business Challenge' was held. They have been working on this business challenge as part of their Welsh Baccalaureate studies. As part of the day, they had to design and launch a new soft drink for the Welsh Rugby Union. They were involved in a workshop with Real Radio to record their radio advert, and also Caboodle Design Studios to design a billboard poster of their drink. The girls then had to present their launch to the other 10 schools who had made it to the finals, business people from Coca-Cola, Welsh Assembly employees and also to Shane Williams who sat on the judging panel and worked with the pupils during the design process. During lunchtime, the teams had a tour or the stadium. After an impressive presentation, Builth Wells High School was named as the runners-up, narrowly beaten by Chepstow High School. As part of their prize, the girls will now go to the Real Radio studios to have their advert professionally recorded and will have a commemorative DVD of the day. The following photos capture the excitement of the day and you can click on the link below to see some video footage. http://www.wru.co.uk/multimedia/25107.php
Election of new Head Girl and Head BoyThe annual elections for a new Head Girl and Head Boy have now taken place and were preceded by a week of talks and speeches, given by the prospective candidates. A record voting turnout was attributed to the atmosphere built up by the attitude of the candidates, with all the 6th Form and staff turning up to vote in the Library, placing their voting slips into a sealed box, which was then taken away and counted by Head of 6th Form Mrs. Laura Lewis. Headteacher, Mrs. Shan Davies said, "I'm thrilled to congratulate our exceptional young people, who have been voted for by their peers and our staff to represent Builth Wells High School. They are a credit to our school". Head of 6th Form, Mrs. Laura Lewis was extremely pleased to congratulate her new Heads and their Deputies and said, "The newly elected Heads and their Deputies will meet with myself throughout the year to discuss school issues from a student's perspective and they will also represent the school when required at events such as Open Evenings". Newly elected Head Girl Lauren Pugh said, "I'm very pleased to have gained the role of Head Girl and will do my utmost to be a good role model".
