Model United Nations Climate Change ConferenceOn 23rd November 2009, BWHS Council had two teams in the above CEWC Cymru event which took place in the County Hall, Aberaeron. Tom Turner, Oli Cox and Owen Jordan represented China and Christian Lally, Chloe Jones and Katy James represented Brazil. The pupil delegations represented countries and non-governmental organisations in negotiations over the same issues facing diplomats and ministers at the United Nations Climate Change Conference which took place in Copenhagen from 7-9th December. Both teams did a huge amount of research in order to accurately portray the views of the countries represented and enjoyed a themed lunch provided by Mrs. Kennedy to correspond with the countries represented. Danielle Johnson from Oxfam sent the following message to the schools who took part: “CONGRATULATIONS to all who took part at the Model United Nations Conference on Climate Change. It was a fantastic day, both fun and informative. It was great to see so many schools taking part. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the teachers for not only bringing the pupils along on the day but for all the effort involved in preparing for the day. And of course to all the fantastic pupils who attended. There were some interesting and heated debates which the pupils threw themselves into wholeheartedly, fully taking on the roles of their countries. Well done to all! A certificate for your school is on it's way to you”. Everyone present at the event committed pledges to take personal action to combat climate change and next month our pledges will be sent back to us so that we can see whether or not we have stuck to them. The following photos were taken during the day and if you would like to view the Mexican wave visit www.the-wave.org.uk/with/465/ and type Aberaeron into Find a friend.

Mock Council of the European Union 2009Tom and Oli represented the School Council at the Mock Council of the European Union 2009 at Crickhowell House, Cardiff Bay in September. Each of the participating schools in Wales were assigned, by means of a draw, to represent either a Member State of the European Union or the European Commission/Council Secretariat. BWHS represented Slovenia. Apart from leaning how to greet everyone and say thank-you in a new language, Tom and Oli had to do a considerable amount of research so that they could accurately represent the views of Slovenia regarding "all Member States of the European Union adopting the Euro by 2015" and "all major constitutional and institutional changes to the European Union should be determined by referenda". Two lively debates took place and all the school teams were extremely well informed.
School Council fundraising 2009-2010Our latest fund-raising activity took place on Thursday, 22nd October. We organised a "WEAR IT PINK" Day to support the Breast Cancer Campaign by encouraging pupils and staff to wear pink. There were prizes for the pupil and member of staff wearing the most pink items. Mrs. Liz Price won the staff prize and a Year 7 pupil won the prize for wearing a magnificent 39 pink items. Many thanks to Mr. Lee Powell, Mr. Adam Morgan, Miss Eleri Wyn, Mr. Dai Davies, Mr. Robyn Lewis and Mr. Mike Williams who entertained a large crowd when they challenged a team of Year 13 pupils to a game of football at lunchtime. The supportive crowd all gave donations to watch Geraint Powell, Geraint Harley, Harry Savage, Darius Nash and Matt Powell put up a spirited defence against the very strong team of teachers. The final score was 6 - 4 to the teachers. Our Catering staff also joined in with the fun by wearing pink aprons and hats. We raised over £300 on the day. Thanks to everyone who supported the event. Year 9 pupils really rose to the challenge of wearing pink.
